Public transport/emergency (ISO TC 204 WG 8)¶
Domain of interest¶
The purpose of WG8 is to develop ITS standards for public transport and emergency vehicle services and facilities. Public transport is defined as publicly accessible transportation enabling the movement of one or more persons via scheduled or on demand services and includes transport by bus, tram, cable car, metro, train, and ferry or publicly accessible shared cars, shared bikes, and shared e-scooters. Emergency vehicle services are defined as emergency, wayside and roadside assistance by police, fire and ambulance vehicles.
WG8 activities include:
- developing standards and technical reports for interoperability of public transport fare management systems
- developing standards and technical reports for performance testing of connectivity and safety for automated driving buses
- identifying a framework and service requirements for responses to automated public transport systems emergencies
- developing standards for onboard equipment for public transport vehicles to include LED Destination Signage
- developing Technical Reports on state of the art services for public transport to identify gaps and needs for standards in areas such as account based ticketing, interconnecting server based ticketing schemes, and AI and Big Data information provision services for public transport.
Public Transport - Performance Testing¶
Overview ¶
The ISO 21734 series pertains to performance testing for the connectivity and safety of automated driving buses. Its purpose is to establish a standard for test procedure for connectivity and safety in operating automated driving buses that communicate with roadside infrastructure at signalized intersections, crosswalks, bus stops, and critical points in bus routes.
ISO 21734-1:2022 Intelligent transport systems — Performance testing for connectivity and safety functions of automated driving buses in public transport — Part 1: General framework
Status: Approved
Abstract: The overall purpose of this document is to provide technical standards at the international level to ensure the safety and connectivity of the Automated Driving Bus (ADB) operating as a public transport mode.
Description:
The objectives of this document include building a framework for operating ADBs in public transit networks, developing performance test methods and procedures in terms of safety and connectivity of ADBs that require communication with roadside infrastructure and with the monitoring and control centre, and providing the service framework and use cases as references for field applications.

ISO/CD 21734-2 Public transport — Performance testing for connectivity and safety functions of automated driving bus — Part 2: Performance requirements and test procedures
Status: Edition 1 (under development)
Abstract: Part 2 focuses on performance requirements for connectivity and safety functions that are required for ensuring reliable Public Transport services by automated driving bus.
Description:
This International Standard will address the role of Intelligent Transport Systems to assist Public Transport by applying automated driving bus. A performance test method and procedure are required to be developed as an International Standard in order to operate automated driving bus safely in Public Transport.
